There will likely be two places in New Jersey — not just one — accepting legal sports bets starting Thursday, NJ Advance Media has learned.
The Borgata, Atlantic City’s top-performing casino, is planning to open its sports wagering parlor Thursday morning, pending approval from the state, a spokeswoman for the gambling hall told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday.
The casino would launch at about 11 a.m., spokeswoman Liza Constandino said.
Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia threw out an interesting idea this week: Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas.
This is not to say the Phillies won’t look to upgrade their offensive output at third base in July if they can manage to right their ship this month and stay relevant in the playoff chase. They have an obligation to improve if they think they can make the postseason now. But Mike Moustakas, a rental player without Machado’s price tag of prospects, might fit the team’s plan better.
Moustakas, 29, entered play on June 12 with 13 HR and 42 RBI. The veteran slugger signed a one-year, $6.5M deal with the Royals before the season. The deal comes with a $15M mutual option for 2019. If Machado arrives in the offseason, the Phillies could decline the option for the cost of $1M.
Since the start of 2012, Moustakas has averaged 26 HR per 162 games played.
You know, their bodies are obviously the biggest thing for them, but there is a mental part of this that they need to keep up with and stay on top of, Patricia said. Review the material, hopefully have some questions when we get back to training camp that they’re asking and we can answer for them and keeping the process rolling.
The Lions wrap up their OTAs this week and will be back on the practice field the final week of July, with the rookies returning a week earlier. The team opens its preseason slate Aug. 10 against the Oakland Raiders, and are holding a pair of joint practices with the Raiders in the days leading up to the matchup.
The team also has joint practices lined up with the New York Giants the following week, at the Lions’ practice facility in Allen Park.
Dwight Clark, the 49ers receiver who died on Monday at age 61, will always be remembered for making The Catch, a leaping grab over Cowboys cornerback Everson Walls that propelled San Francisco to the Super Bowl. And even though Walls was beaten on the play, he remembers Clark fondly.
While Earl Thomas and Frank Clark have stayed away from voluntary practices as they get set to enter the final years of their contracts, Brown has been at OTAs working with new offensive line coach Mike Solari. The Seahawks are trying to revitalize a running game that was abysmal in 2017 and the success of the offensive line will be a vitally important part of that pursuit.
That’s been the big gamble for most Bill Belichick lieutenants who strike out on their own. Belichick’s ways work only because they work. If pushing players too hard doesn’t translate to victories, the person doing the pushing quickly will be pushed out.
Still, if Monarrez was looking for an edgy opinion during the slow months, he should have at least added the caveat that, no matter his methods, Patricia will never lose his players if he wins games.
The first players to take a knee during the national anthem did so to bring attention to two issues — police misconduct and social inequality, McCaskey said, via J.J. Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago. There are legitimate issues that deserve discussion and action. As a country, we can do better. It’s part of the founding fathers’ charge to us to form a more perfect union. Commissioner [Roger] Goodell said it very well, and it bears repeating — it was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic. This is not and was never the case.
Cardinals tight end Jermaine Gresham didn’t realize why he was suddenly a big deal.
And that might be the best part of a story that was already very good.
Gresham became a viral sensation last week when he helped fellow airline passenger by paying a $50 baggage fee when her credit card didn’t work. But he didn’t realize he was viral until a Cardinals staffer mentioned it to him, since he doesn’t have a social media presence.
He was like ‘Yo, you’re a viral sensation,’ Gresham said, via Katherine Fitzgerald of the Arizona Republic. And I was like ‘For what? I didn’t get arrested or nothing.’
Here’s a fun question: Is Matthew Stafford a superstar? For years, the Lions quarterback seemed to exist just below that special tier of quarterbacks, the one that was reserved for the likes of Brady, Rodgers, Brees, etc. He was a franchise quarterback, sure, but would Stafford ever actually take his game to the next level? Well, it took eight years, but Stafford reached a career zenith in 2017, piling up the yardage and the touchdowns while cutting down on the turnovers that had been his undoing in the past. The partnership with Jim Bob Cooter has done wonders for Stafford’s career, and the Lions made the supremely wise decision to retain their offensive coordinator after firing head coach Jim Caldwell. We consider Stafford a belated addition to the Superstar Club… and we expect him to stay there.
Following Wednesday’s loss, in which he earned a triple-double, James compared facing the Warriors to what NFL teams go through when playing against Bill Belichick and the dynastic New England Patriots.
The margin of error is very low. It’s almost like playing the Patriots: you just can’t have mistakes, they’re not going to beat themselves, James said, via NBA TV.
As he continued, James’ assessment could work as well to describe the Patriots as it does the Warriors:
When you’re able to force a miscue on them you have to be able to capitalize, he said. And then you have to be so in-tuned and razor sharp and focused in every single possession. You can’t have miscommunication, you can’t have lulls, you can’t have ‘my faults’ or ‘my bads’ and things like that because they are going to make you pay.
James, an avid football fan, hit the nail on the head.
With a hole in their rotation and their bats suddenly silent, the Red Sox got a lift from Steven Wright, who could play a key role going forward.
With first place at stake, Cubs-Brewers rivalry gets chance to grow
Bryant has a seven-game hitting streak and is 13 of 31 in that span. But Maddon decided to put him in a different seat for the day because he hadn’t been driving the ball with his usual force.
What I did see was a different (more upright) stance at the plate, approach at the plate, Maddon said. That’s what I did see. I thought he looked really comfortable on defense. … And that might have been the residue of the at-bats.
Bryant said he wasn’t too surprised when he got the text from Maddon in the morning. After all, his manager likes to shuffle the lineup.
The Patriots added several veterans at receiver this offseason, but they have had precious little time to develop chemistry with Tom Brady.
Williams, who attended Arizona State University, has hit a bump in the road recently after a six-start April in which he made five quality starts, won four, and did not give up more than two earned runs in any of the six. Since then, he has given up four or more earned runs in five of his six starts with one victory and a 6.06 ERA. He is 0-1 with an 8.50 ERA in his last four starts since a 7-0 victory over the White Sox on May 15.
Williams made two strong starts against Arizona last season, his only two career appearances against the Diamondbacks. He gave only one fun in five innings in a win at Chase Field and one run in six 11 innings in a no-decision at home. Now what for Earl Thomas, Seahawks?
To avoid the embarrassment of a winless homestand, the slumping New York Mets needed to beat the top team in baseball with its best pitcher on the mound.
That’s exactly what they did.
Seth Lugo tossed six dominant innings in a stellar spot start, Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer and the Mets blanked the New York Yankees 2-0 on Sunday night to snap an eight-game skid.
Rockies manager Bud Black spoke afterward about how Shaw’s mechanics were better and the hits he gave up after that strange play must have had eyes. But Shaw was in no mood to excuse his meltdown.
I mean, the hits were whatever. I field that, throw to second, we turn the double play, I strike out the next guy, the inning’s over. Nothing else happens after that, Shaw said. It’s obviously the bobble and the throwaway.
All those hits that barely eluded the Rockies? That’s baseball, said shortstop Trevor Story, whose night included two homers and a defensive gem that were rendered mere footnotes in Colorado’s sixth straight loss at home and seventh consecutive defeat to the Diamondbacks at Coors Field dating to last June 21.
Silvino Bracho (2-0) threw a pair of 1-2-3 innings and struck out four in relief of starter Matt Koch, who gave up three homers, including Story’s 13th and 14th and one to DJ LeMahieu, his sixth.
They’ve wasted the last few years of Eli’s career, they’ve wasted his prime, O’Hara told NJ.com. It’s been hard to sit and watch that happen. I’m glad to see that they found a way to correct it, but Eli can still play the game.
Former Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said O’Hara was right.
I agree with him, Tuck said of O’Hara’s opinion. We all know what Eli can do when he is healthy and when he has comparable athletes around him. I don’t think he had those. Anything other than that, you are just lying to yourself.
Of course, Manning himself has not played well in recent years, and he deserves plenty of the blame for the Giants’ struggles as well. Even if his teammates like him well enough that they won’t say so.
When the roster for the Yankees ‘ Old-Timers’ Day was announced last week, former catcher Jim Leyritz was not on the list.
So the 1996 World Series hero turned to social media to rip the team’s front office for his exclusion, specifically president Randy Levine and senior VP of marketing Debbie Tymon.
And Leyritz liked a tweet that said : The only slider Levine has hit is of the cheeseburger variety. If the guy (wasn’t) literally in bed (with) ownership for decades, the team would take a pulse from the fan base on what we thought of Randy Levine. Results. (Wouldn’t). Be. Positive.
Just last week, we saw Chargers tight end Hunter Henry and Eagles linebacker Paul Worrilow suffer torn ACLs that will almost certainly cost them all of the 2018 season. That’s a fate Dunlap will not allow to happen in a voluntary OTA session.
It will be interesting to see what approach Dunlap takes for the mandatory minicamp in June. He obviously doesn’t want to risk injury, so perhaps the Bengals will allow him to attend but stay on the sideline and avoid injury risks.
It is real easy for the guy who was made the highest paid receiver in the NFL following the 2016 season and then got his deal restructured again this offseason to have his 2018 salary fully guaranteed, tell the guy who is looking for a longterm deal to show up. I mean, Bell has been arguably the best running back in the league for the last few seasons, but I get the hesitation to give him a lucrative contract over an extended period of time. It just doesn’t work to pay running backs huge contracts in the NFL anymore. He has also had trouble with the law as well as suspensions from the league.
The Patriots signed punter Corey Bojorquez after he tried out at the team’s rookie minicamp over the weekend, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
The team had to make a corresponding move to get him on the roster.
It’s no secret that Bill Belichick likes left-footed punters, and Bojorquez is one, just like incumbent punter Ryan Allen. Bojorquez also has experience as a holder.
Thank you to the Parker Police and South Metro Fire Rescue in Parker for getting to me asap, attending all my needs and transporting me to the hospital safely. Thank you to the doctors at Parker Adventist for treating me as a first class patient also. I’m very grateful and humbled to be alive. My family and I thanks everyone who has prayed for me over the last few days. My thoughts and prayers are with the other victims and I hope they all are safe and doing well.”
Henderson told Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver that he feels sore, but it’s comparable to the soreness he feels after a hard-fought game.
According to 9 News, the driver of the other car was Rainbow Sunset Espinoza, a 37-year-old woman who is facing 11 charges: stealing a vehicle, driving recklessly, driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading police, failing to turn on her headlights, driving a car without plates, driving while her license was revoked, running red lights, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
Henderson was one of four people injured, but all of them have now been released from the hospital.
I cannot express how humbled and honored that I am to be mentioned in the same sentence as Walter Payton. A man who did everything right not only on the field but also off of it.
You may have noticed, if you’ve been on the internet at all in the past three days, that everyone is talking about only one thing. That one thing is actually a question: Laurel or Yanny? The debate is tearing America apart at the seams and dividing the country. It all started earlier this week when someone posted a pronunciation of the word Laurel from Vocabulary.com. What happened next was total chaos. Looking for a hot new podcast that’s your home for all things NFL ? Look no further. The Pick Six Podcast with Will Brinson has you covered every weekday morning with new episodes around 30 minutes each.
Although that clip clearly says Laurel, apparently there are people out there who hear Yanny, so that’s where we are right now.
The debate got so big that even NFL teams started arguing about it. Take the Panthers for instance — they couldn’t seem to agree on what exactly they were hearing.
Poor NFL Films. Things got so confusing that they had to change their address out of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross offered an unexpected defense of Lions coach Matt Patricia’s character on Wednesday.
Ross told reporters (via the Detroit Free Press) at the NFL owners meetings it was his understanding that Patricia never “slept with” the woman Patricia was accused of sexually assaulting in a Texas hotel room 22 years ago.
The 1999 St. Louis Rams were coming off a 4-12 season, their second consecutive last-place finish in the NFC West. Dick Vermeil’s team hadn’t made the playoffs or posted a winning record in any of its nine previous campaigns, which produced a mark of 45-99. Even worse, starting quarterback Trent Green went down with a torn ACL and MCL in his knee during the Rams’ third preseason game, turning things over to a 28-year-old backup with one career NFL game under his belt.
You know what happened, of course. Kurt Warner stepped in and directed one of the best offenses in league history to a 13-3 season and the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory. Imagine if the 2017 Jacksonville Jaguars — who were 47-97 the past nine seasons — lost Blake Bortles during the preseason and won a Super Bowl with third-stringer Ryan Nassib at the helm. Nobody can even pretend they saw the Rams coming.
As the Bears hold three sets of OTAs in May and June followed by a full-squad minicamp on June 5-7, it’s worth monitoring how Trubisky meshes with his new weapons. Chicago added Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel and Trey Burton in free agency to better support the 2017 No. 2 overall pick.
On top of that, Trubisky is learning a fresh offense under the watchful eyes of new head coach Matt Nagy and offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich.
Just having a bunch of brilliant offensive minds around me, I’m just getting a lot of information, Trubisky told reporters in mid-April. “I’m trying to be a sponge, and it’s been a lot of fun working with those guys and learning as much as I can.”
If the North Carolina product shines in the coming weeks, it may be a sign that he’ll continue to build on a strong finish to his rookie campaign.
Newly crowned San Francisco 49ers franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also knows a thing or two about finishing strong. The 26-year-old wrapped up the 2017 season with victories in each of his first five starts as a member of the 49ers.
Tom Brady’s offseason absence will continue.
The Patriots quarterback won’t be at the opening of the team’s voluntary organized team activities on Monday, ESPN reported, citing an unidentified source.
“Even without those fines, this is going to be tough on the players, and I want a chance to speak with the coaches and other players to get feedback on this policy and to build on the good work and momentum that we have built up on these issues of social justice, on legislation, and all the things that we can do. I don’t think that this policy will interfere with that at all.
“I have a really good relationship with the players, and I hope we can keep that going and I trust that we will. I’m so proud of our players and their efforts to date. I think that is the most important thing to get across. I could not be more proud of the guys.”
Hooker tore his ACL and his MCL in an October 22 game against the Jaguars during his rookie season.
The 15th overall pick in 2017, Hooker played in seven games with six starts. He made three interceptions and four pass breakups.
Carolina is home to many who cheer on the Steelers, and Tepper has pointed out the parallels to the Panthers’ fan base, but the sale of the Charlotte’s team redefines “Pittsburgh South.”
Tepper is coming off seeing MIke Tomlin turn the Steelers into a steady force, even though the team has fallen short of winning a second Super Bowl with their longtime coach going on a decade. The Panthers have at least been close to the level of being championship-caliber every season under Rivera.
But the Panthers also have teetered on becoming what they were under John Fox a boom-or-mediocre team in the NFC South from one season to the next. Fox was 63-49 in his first seven seasons, only a game and a half shy of Rivera in the same span, with one less playoff appearance and as many NFC championships.
For the first time in three years, the Broncos won’t have a quarterback competition. Receiver Emmanuel Sanders likes it that way.
“You can sit back and say we’re all professional football players and you’ve got to deal with that situation, but at the same time, obviously you can’t gain the same chemistry,” Sanders said. “You don’t have the same mindset. You have to talk to two different quarterbacks. When you’re going into individual routes, you have to go to one guy and then go with the next guy. You don’t really gain that chemistry. You’re not maximizing the opportunity. Now we’re maximizing the opportunity, and hopefully it pays off.”
His base salary is dropping from $3.15 million to $2.575 million, with some incentives added back in to allow him to recoup some of the money. It cleared $500,000 in cap space.
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from allegations that he attacked his then-girlfriend in their home in February.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 17, at which point Foster’s former girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, may testify under oath.
Ennis has recanted the allegations that led to the domestic violence case. Foster has been charged with domestic violence with an allegation that he inflicted great bodily injury, forcefully attempting to prevent a victim from reporting a crime, and possession of an assault weapon.
The 28-year-old woman initially told police that Foster dragged her by her hair, physically threw her out of their house, and punched her in the head eight to 10 times. She later issued a statement through her attorney saying her injuries were the result of a fight with another woman.
